The firm of Gagneau Frères was established in 1800 at 25 rue d’Enghien, Paris, and later at 115 rue de Lafayette. It exhibited at the major international exhibitions of the 19th century with fine quality decorative light fittings. The firm received a bronze medal at the Exposition des Produits de l’Industrie in 1819 and a silver medal in 1844 in the ‘Bronze appliqués aux lampes’ category. Gagneau Frères were featured as lighting specialists and several of their light fixtures were highlighted in the Art Journal 1900 and Les Industries d’Art 1900, from the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1900.

This ornate pair of marble and ormolu-mounted vases represents the opulent style of the Belle Epoque that was popular during the reign of Napoleon III in the mid to late 19th century in Paris. Drawing upon the fluid rococo style of Louis XV, these vases evoke the extravagant taste of French royalty in the 18th century.
